Off-the-shelf warehouse software ships with an opinion about how a warehouse is laid out, and that opinion was formed by averaging thousands of other buildings. When it meets your racking, your aisle widths, and the fact that your fast movers are near the dock for a reason, something has to give — and it is never the software. Teams end up re-organising a working floor to satisfy a screen, or quietly ignoring the system's pick path and doing it their own way, which reintroduces every error the WMS was bought to prevent. The cost is not a licence fee. It is walking time, repeated every shift, by every picker, forever.

Accuracy is a process problem, not a scanner problem

Buying scanners does not fix count accuracy, because most inventory errors are not typing errors. They come from moments where the process permits ambiguity: goods received against a purchase order that does not quite match, a partial pick nobody recorded, a return put back on a shelf without an adjustment. A system that only captures the happy path pushes all of that into someone's memory. Building around your operation means the exceptions are first-class — every adjustment has a reason code and an owner, and the count you see is one you can defend.

The seam between the warehouse and everything else

A WMS that does not know about orders, billing, or purchasing is a very expensive way to generate re-keying. The genuinely valuable part is usually the seam: a receipt that updates stock and closes a purchase order, a pick that decrements the same number sales is quoting from, a shipment that triggers the invoice. Vendors sell these as separate modules with separate integrations because that is how their pricing works, not because the operation is actually separated that way.

Yes, and we normally recommend it. Cutting over a live warehouse in one step is a risk with no upside — we run parallel on a subset until the numbers agree.

Do we have to shut down for cycle counts?

No. Counting is built to run against live stock, with variances recorded and reconciled rather than requiring a freeze.
