The first custom build should not be a giant platform
The mistake small businesses make with custom software is trying to rebuild the company in one swing. That usually creates a large project with unclear ownership and too many opinions. The better first move is narrower: choose the process that is already expensive because people keep retyping, reconciling, chasing, or asking for status.
That process becomes the first owned operating layer. It may be the order pipeline behind an e-commerce brand, the proposal process for a home-services company, a booking and checkout flow for a local service business, or an inventory and fulfillment system for a seller that has outgrown its storefront. The point is to make the work easier to run before expanding the software surface.
