What changed
According to the 2026 Main Street AI Gap Report from Homebase, 74% of small businesses now use or are piloting AI. That is a jump of 10 points in a single year. Most report positive business impact, but the national press, including CIO.com, is naming a new problem: the 'investment-to-usage gap.'
Businesses are buying AI licenses, but the work itself is not changing. The real gains, hours saved, fewer errors, faster turnaround, come only when AI is built into the workflow. Without that, companies pay for software that sits idle, and staff keep running the same manual steps.
