What changed
Recent reporting from Vendasta and the Upwork Research Institute shows that small and mid-sized businesses are adopting AI tools at a rapid pace. But most of these tools work in isolation, with little to no integration across the systems you already use. The result is that owners and staff still move information by hand between inboxes, spreadsheets, and apps.
According to SAS and IDC, only 10.4% of SMBs have built orchestrated AI workflows where agents act across systems. Meanwhile, 84% of AI users told Reimagine Main Street that their tools don’t work well together. This means that the promised efficiency gains from AI are often lost to manual steps, retyping, and context switching.
Gartner’s 2026 forecast expects over 60% of SMBs will deploy AI agents in the next two years, but today, most are still stuck with tool sprawl. The businesses that act now to connect their systems with real automation will see the benefits first, while others risk falling further behind.
