What changed
According to Upwork Research Institute and TechInformed, most small and midsize business leaders are now confident enough to give AI agents high-stakes work. 62% say they are very or extremely confident handing over important tasks, and 32% call AI agents mission-critical to their strategy. Pilots are active in decision support, workflow automation, and information retrieval, with skepticism dropping to almost zero.
Despite this confidence, the majority of SMBs report modest productivity gains. 74% see improvement, but most put it under 25%. Only 14% say AI is fully embedded in their business. ROI uncertainty is now the second largest barrier to further adoption, right behind data security. Pilots are funded and running, but most leaders are still waiting to see meaningful returns.
The market has shifted from asking 'should we try AI?' to 'is our pilot actually working?' For operators still running manual processes, the pressure is on to quantify gains and move from pilot to proven system. The engineering layer, the part that turns pilots into business results, is now the missing piece.
