What changed
In the past ten days, OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, Google, and Shopify all launched AI agent features aimed at small businesses. These tools connect to common apps like QuickBooks, HubSpot, and Google Workspace, with ready-made workflows for departments such as finance, sales, and HR. PYMNTS reported that the focus has shifted from developers to Main Street operators, with AI agents pitched as the new backbone for everyday business tasks.
However, Crypto Briefing and AI Agent Store both note that these agent platforms only cover the basics. They ship with a handful of pre-wired integrations and leave the unique, custom processes of each business untouched. For a $2M brick-and-mortar operation, the out-of-the-box workflows do not handle custom intake forms, specific scheduling rules, or job-costing systems. The gap between demo-ready agents and real business needs is now visible to every operator.
