What changed
According to Rework and QuickBooks, 68% of US small businesses now use AI regularly. This is a jump from about 48% just two years ago. Owners have adopted AI tools for productivity, customer support, and finance. Most teams now have ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude open each week.
But the outcome is not matching the adoption. Bluehost reports only 41% of AI-using owners see revenue go up, and the real driver is not the tool, but the operator’s confidence in using it. Owners who rate themselves high on AI confidence see revenue lift at 65%. For those with low confidence, only 23% see any lift. The gap is not about access, but about fit, knowledge, and how business-specific the system is.
The top blockers are clear: 30% say they lack AI knowledge, 27% say tools are not specific to their business, and 19% cite no pre-packaged solutions. The market narrative is 'AI is here,' but the reality is most operators do not see results because AI is not built for their process.
